I have been in the neon business for 19 years and

it was to my fascination and admiration to Mr. Francis TOWNSEND and his imense knowledge of all there is to know about neon and its principles.... that my intrest grew. listening to him explain so many various aspects and principles, I became overwhelmed. he would stop and explain it again.. and then he would stop and ask me what I thought he had said. Usually I was only half on the mark to understanding what he was telling me. I always proclaimed that he had forgotten more than I will ever know when it comes to neon and its principles.

I remember a time where a whole session was on just mercury traps and how I should do it the proper way. Mind you, I learned from a 76 year old neon master who had been doing neon since he was a teenager. This neon master taught me his way and I tried to emulate his every action precisely. So when Mr. TOWNSEND corrected me, I had so many questions as to why the way I learned was so wrong.

Now after aquiring his manufacturing operation and all its pieces of equipment and various components he used for testing.. excuse me.. triple testing, I found a small box with his specially crafted mercury traps. I had to pause and a flash of revelation swept over me. You have to understand that in his shrewd way, he would not tell you all there is to know, so as to hold out the ace card for you to figure out. Upon seeing the mercury trap he so geniously made, I instantly remembered our whole talk.

I have some awfully oversize shoes to fill, for Mr. TOWNSEND was a true genious and visionary. I do however was granted the forward thinking process he used in a lot of the techniques and model designs, and reasoning he used to craft such a magnificent pumping manifold unit, that in my opinion far exceedes other manufactures units. I will continue with the basic designs and will incorporate additional features for production shops with large pumping volumn of neon units. I will also be introducing a fully automated pumping station that will help the production shop in efficient and consistantly uniform neon units.

I have used the same Townsend pumping manifold for over 13 years and dare say that I have produced many miles of neon that is still in operation. I just today visited my first channel letter sign I completely fabricated in 1992 and am amazed. I absolutely do not and have not cut corners, and it was evident with that first neon channel letter sign.

When I first started in neon I had an old model 3 Mr. TOWNSEND sold me. it was so different than his later models. I called it my christmas tree because it was only about 8" tall with minimal valves and a 36" filling guage. I used it up until 1996 and then aquired my last TOWNSEND neon pumping station. I recently upgraded to the model 9 and I have to tell you that sometimes I miss my old one due to some of the features he incorporated into it that the newer models don't have. I will be bringing back into the new model 10 a step back into the past with some of the finest design features and a few of my own innovations.

I will also be bringing back the neon and argon gases refils with a new twist. Gasses that will be regionally formulated to achieve greater cold weather operation.
